In 1999, Chitose Abe founded the Japanese brand Sacai, a luxury label known for its unique pattern combinations and design techniques, and is currently the label's Creative Director and owner. When we first heard about her, we were so excited to learn more about this incredible #girlboss, mom and all around raw talent!
Before founding Sacai, Chitose worked at Comme de Garcons as a pattern cutter and as a member of Junya Watanbe's design team. Afterwards, she became a mom and now, as the head of Sacai, she bases her collections "...purely on my creative instincts. Maybe I’m an idealist, but I am a firm believer that if you’re producing well-designed products at the right price that your business is destined to flourish.” When we read this, we immediately inspired by not only her straightforward, matter-of-fact approach but also the idea of creating nothing but quality design and following your gut.
As for her design aesthetic, Chitose creates "...pieces that combine the discipline of textural Japanese pieces with the practicality of everyday life." After viewing her Spring/Summer 2021 Collection, we were immediately drawn to its thick, bold stripes juxtaposed with lacy, sheer prints and innovative spins on suiting. We think it's safe to say that we'll be following Chitose and Sacai for a long time to come!
